(Fwe and Subia
of Caprivi) - The Caprivi is home to the Subia and Fwe tribes of the
east, of which the latter includes a number of Yeyi, Totela and Lozi
communities. A large degree of cultural homogeneity was effected in
Caprivi by the consecutive periods of Lozi and Kololo
domination. During this time Silozi was established as the
lingua franca for all the groups in the region, and as medium of
instruction in the schools. Supreme authority is vested in the
chief as head of the tribe. The Fwe and Subia practice a mixed
economy of hoe-farming, pastoralism, hunting, gathering and
fishing. The core of Fwe and Subia religion is ancestor worship.
The deceased ancestors are regarded as the guardian spirits of
the family.
