The inhabitants of the Okavango region are divided into five politically distinct tribal groups characterized by considerable cultural and linguistic differences. They are riverine peoples all living along the banks of the Okavango River where they practice their subsistence economy, which is based on agriculture supplemented by pastoralism, fishing and hunting. Closely related to the Owambo, the Okavango also originates from the large lakes of East Africa. Among the five Okavango tribes, the basic structure of society is determined by the institution of matrilineal descent reckoning.
