The Nama are the famous ‘red people’ (/awa-khoin) of
Namibia. Many of them live in tribal areas
of Namaland that comprises parts of the Hardap and Karas regions. Other
Nama tribes are settled as far field as the Kuiseb valley in the Namib
desert and Sesfontein in the north-west. The traditional subsistence
form of the Nama is based on stock-farming, supplemented by hunting and
gathering. The staple food of the Nama is meat and milk, supplemented by
veld food. During the past century most of the Nama tribes were exposed
to intensive Christianisation and missionary endeavours. Although large
numbers of them joined Christian denominations, traditional religious
views to some extent still prevail.
