The area traditionally known as Owamboland is situated
in the far north of the country between the Etosha National Park
and the Angolan border is home to the Owambo. The Owambo tribes belong to the
south-western Bantu group, but are culturally closely related to the
matrilineal agriculturalists of Central Africa. The rule of descent
reckoning followed by the Owambo is basically matrilineal. Kinship is
determined through the mother, and consequently children are affiliated
to the lineage and clan of their mother only. The Owambo practice
agriculture as well as cattle herding. The staple food of the people is
finger millet, which is used for making porridge and for brewing beer.
