The Damara,
called Daman by the Nama and ≠Nu-khoin (Black people) by themselves,
are of Negroid origin, but their language is a close dialect of Nama. They have left their abode in West
Africa long before the Bantu tribes started their southerly migration
from the great lakes in East Africa. The migration route of the Damara
remains a mystery to this day, as well as the nature of their original
language and culture. In the past, the Damara were subjected to the Nama
and Herero for a very long time. Many of them took refuge in the
mountains, in semi-desert regions and other uninhabited places.
Traditionally, the Damara were a hunter-gatherer people. After the
arrival of pastoral Bantu-speaking tribes, some of the Damara obtained
goats and sheep and became small stock farmers.
